This milieu based day treatment program for severely behaviorally disturbed children provides both education and treatment at the Discovery School site on the JMHS campus. Enrollment is open to a total of eight students.

Staff Qualifications: The staff at Discovery School is an integrated academic/mental health team experienced with working with troubled children and young people. Together they create a learning environment utilizing the research based techniques of Developmental Therapy-Developmental Teaching. Staffed by Child Mental Health Professionals, trained Aides, and Educators with qualifications both as Child Mental Health Specialists and Teachers, the program is uniquely tailored to each child's individual needs. Regular consulation with a licensed Board certified Child Psychiatrist supports staff activities.

What's Provided: Discovery School is a non-public school recognized by the Washington State Board of Education. It is a protected environment designed to provide success for students who have not been able to succeed in their home School Districts. Milieu treatment provides developmental and academic assessment, parent education and support, adapted physical education, IEP planning and implementation and close coordination with home school districts and well as families.

How Long Do Students Attend: Students are referred for the school year. At the end of each semester students may be evaluated for transition back to home Districts.

Referrals are coordinated with local school districts through their Special Services programs.
